Concussion Testing Reaches More than 1,400 Puyallup Student Athletes

Puyallup, Wash. – September 18, 2013 – Apple Physical Therapy has performed baseline concussion testing for more than 1,400 Puyallup School District student athletes with support from volunteers from Sound Family Medicine and Summit View Clinic. Apple will be conducting the same tests in other area schools as fall sports ramp up.

Along with the push for better prevention and management of concussions, many schools in the South Puget Sound and around the state have begun requiring baseline concussion testing for participation in football, soccer, basketball and wrestling.

Baseline testing gives medical professionals a comparison tool to assess an athlete’s balance and cognitive function. By establishing what is normal for the athlete, it’s easier to tell when there is a potential issue and when he or she is ready to resume activity.

“Concussion prevention and management has become the most important issue in sports right now,” said Josh Waltier, MPT, ATC, COMT, Director of Athletic Training for Apple Physical Therapy. “Baseline concussion testing is one piece of the puzzle we use to manage concussed athletes. When we hear about professional athletes experiencing lifelong damage because of concussions, it’s an obvious response to do everything we can.

Apple Physical Therapy’s athletic trainers use the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool and graduated return-to-play protocol recommended by the 4th Annual International Conference on Concussion in Sport. Their recommendations are endorsed by the International Olympic Committee, NFL, FIFA and other professional sports organizations.
