Dr. John D. Childs, PT, PhD, MBA, OCS, FAAOMPT

Dr. Childs is an Assistant Professor and Director of Research in the U.S. Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy and an Assistant Professor the U.S. Army-Baylor Post-professional Doctoral Program in Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapy. Dr. Childs completed his PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Arizona. Dr. Childs is a board-certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapists. He is internationally recognized by his peers for his expertise in advanced clinical examination techniques, evidence-based practice, and manual physical therapy. Dr. Childs has made numerous presentations at scientific meetings and has lectured extensively at the graduate and post-graduate levels. Actively involved in clinical research related to identifying subgroups of patients with low back and neck pain, he has received numerous grants from federal and professional funding agencies and has published over 25 manuscripts in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Annals of Internal Medicine, Spine, and Physical Therapy. Dr. Childs is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. He has received numerous awards related to his work, including being a two-time recipient of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists' Excellence in Research Award, Texas Physical Therapy Association's Outstanding Research Platform Presentation, and the Air Force Physical Therapist of the Year Award. Dr. Childs is the President of Evidence in Motion, a professional translational continuing education company that fosters the advancement of evidence-based physical therapy practice, research, and education by providing premiere educational offerings and consultative services for individual practitioners and educational institutions.

Dr. Joshua A. Cleland, DPT, OCS

Dr. Cleland earned a Master of Physical Therapy Degree from Notre Dame College in 2000 and the Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from Creighton University in 2001. He received board certification from the American Physical Therapy Association as an Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist in 2002. Joshua is presently an Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at Franklin Pierce College and practices clinically in outpatient orthopaedics at Rehabilitation Services of Concord Hospital, Concord, NH. He is currently pursuing a PhD and expects to defend his dissertation in 2006. He is actively involved in numerous clinical research studies investigating the effectiveness of manual physical therapy in the management of spine and extremities disorders. In addition, Joshua is also a Fellow in the Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship Program at Regis University, Denver, CO. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy and a reviewer for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. He has recently authored a textbook titled Evidence-Based Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Examination which is currently in press with Icon Learning Systems and expected to be available in June of 2005.

Dr. G. Kelley Fitzgerald, PT, PhD, OCS

Dr. Fitzgerald is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh. He received a PhD in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy from MCP-Hahnemann University. He has been board-certified as an Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist since 1992. His current clinical and research activities specialize in evaluation and treatment of knee disorders and the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for strength training. He has received numerous research grants including federal funding from the National Institutes of Health and has published research and other articles related to physical therapy management of knee disorders extensively over the past 15 years. He is currently an Editorial Board Member for the journal Physical Therapy and has served as an Associate Editor for Arthritis Care and Research. Dr. Fitzgerald currently teaches first-professional and post-professional courses in lower extremity musculoskeletal physical therapy at the University of Pittsburgh. His clinical practice is with the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine, Pittsburgh, PA.

Dr. Timothy W. Flynn, PT, PhD, OCS, FAAOMPT

Dr. Flynn is board certified in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, and a frequent research presenter at state, national, and international meetings. Dr. Flynn is widely published including 5 book chapters, 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and 35 abstracts on orthopaedics, biomechanics, and manual therapy issues. He was the editor and author of the Butterworth-Heinemann textbook The Thoracic Spine and Ribcage- Musculoskeletal Evaluation & Treatment and author of 3 educational CD-ROMs on Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy. Dr. Flynn has received research grants from the Department of Defense, Foundation for Physical Therapy and the Texas Physical Therapy Education and Research Foundation. He was the the senior Army Medical Department consultant for the Department of Defense & Veterans Administration Clinical Practice Guideline Workgroup on low back pain and sciatica in primary care. Awards include the James A. Gould Excellence in Teaching Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, the Steven J. Rose Excellence in Research, and the Distinguished Alumnus- Marquette University Program in Physical Therapy. Dr. Flynn is an expert clinician who continues to maintain an active research agenda in the areas of spinal and extremity manipulation, low back disorders, characterization of spinal instability, and the development of clinical prediction rules. Dr. Flynn is the President of Manipulations, Inc. (www.manipulationsinc.com) a company dedicated to providing evidence-based educational products and services to practitioners and educational institutions involved in musculoskeletal patient care. He is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy and an Associate Professor, Department of Physical Therapy, Regis University. Dr. Steven Z. George, PT, PhD

Dr. George is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and a member of the leadership committee for the Brooks Center for Rehabilitation Studies at the University of Florida. He received his BS in Physical Therapy from West Virginia University in 1994 and practiced at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for 7 years, primarily in outpatient settings. Dr. George completed his MS in Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1997 and his PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2002. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in pain research and rehabilitation outcomes from the University of Florida in 2004. Dr. George’s primary research interest involves the utilization of biopsychosocial models for the prevention and treatment of disability from musculoskeletal pain. He has received competitive research grants supporting his work in this area from the National Institutes of Health, the Foundation for Physical Therapy, and the University of Florida. He has presented his clinical research findings at several scientific meetings, including the Combined Sections meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association and annual meetings for the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, the American Pain Society, and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. George has published 3 book chapters and 19 peer-review articles in respected journals like Spine, Physical Therapy, Pain, Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, European Journal of Pain, and Clinical Journal of Pain. He also is a frequent manuscript reviewer for several journals related to rehabilitation and pain research. He has been recognized for his clinical research efforts with the Rose Excellence in Research Award from the Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Jack Walker Award from the American Physical Therapy Association.

Dr. Deydre S. Teyhen, PT, PhD, OCS

Dr. Teyhen is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Center for Physical Therapy Research in the U.S. Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy at Fort Sam Houston, TX. She also serves as a research consultant to the Spine Research Center and the Defense Spinal Cord and Column Injury Center at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington D.C. and to the Military Performance Laboratory at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. Dr. Teyhen completed her PhD in Biomechanics from the University of Texas in 2004. She received a Master of Physical Therapy from the U.S. Army-Baylor University in 1995 and a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Science from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1993. Dr. Teyhen’s professional experience and training have been primarily in orthopaedic physical therapy. She is a board-certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties, a certified Health Fitness Instructor from the American College of Sports Medicine, and a certified Health Promotion Director through the Cooper Institute. Dr. Teyhen’s research has focused on the development of imaging tools that can enhance rehabilitation of spinal and shoulder dysfunctions. She has been developing a novel approach to measure spinal and shoulder kinematics in those with lumbar and shoulder instability using digital fluoroscopic video technique. Furthermore, she has been clinically examining the ability to use real-time ultrasound imaging as a measurement and biofeedback tool to enhance the delivery of medical care to those with spinal pain since 1999. She has lectured extensively on the examination and treatment of patients with lumbar instability, therapeutic exercise, injury prevention, digital fluoroscopic video, and real-time ultrasound imaging. Dr. Teyhen serves as a manuscript reviewer for rehabilitative and biomechanical journals and is currently an Editorial Review Board Member of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

Dr. Wainner is an Associate Professor and Director of Research in the U.S. Army-Baylor University Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy. He is also an Associate Professor the U.S. Army-Baylor Post-professional Doctoral Program in Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapy. He is nationally recognized by both clinical and scientific communities for his expertise in the area of the clinical examination, manual therapy, and management of spinal disorders. He has published over 20 manuscripts in leading peer-reviewed journals and is the author of 2 educational CD-ROMs on Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy. Dr. Wainner has received numerous awards related to his work, including the coveted Steven J. Rose Excellence in Research Award, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists' Excellence in Research Award, the Texas Physical Therapy Association's Texas Physical Therapy Researcher of the Year Award, and is a two-time recipient of the AF Physical Therapist of the Year Award. He is currently an Editorial Review Board Member for the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy. Dr. Wainner is the President of Texas Physical Therapy Specialists, P.C. Dr. Julie M. Whitman, PT, DSc, OCS, FAAOMPT

Dr. Whitman is a faculty member at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, and currently practices at PRO Physical Therapy in Boulder, Colorado. She graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1992 with a BS in biology and received her MPT from the US Army-Baylor University Graduate Program in Physical Therapy in 1994. She is a 2000 graduate of the US Army Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapy Program and earned her Doctor of Science degree in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy with a concentration in manual therapy and primary care from Baylor University in 2001. Dr Whitman has a total of 10 years of primary care physical therapy experience in the civilian and military environments and is actively involved in numerous clinical research studies relating to orthopaedic and manual physical therapy. Dr Whitman has numerous research publications in peer reviewed journals, has presented research both nationally and internationally, and has extensive teaching experience in the areas of evidence-based physical therapy management of spine and extremity disorders. Additionally, she is the co-author of 3 interactive educational CD ROM’s on orthopaedic and manual physical therapy management of the spine and extremities. Dr Whitman currently serves an editorial review board member for the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, a member of the Board of Examiners for the American Academy of Othopaedic and Manual Physical Therapy (www.aaompt.org), and is a faculty member for the newly developed Manual Therapy Fellowship at Regis University (www.regis.edu/tdpt), Denver, CO.
