EIM's Emergency Response Course

Instructor: Dr. Teresa L. Schuemann PT, DPT, SCS, ATC, CSCS

EIM's Emergency Response Course (ERC) integrates the objectives set forth by the American Red Cross and the Department of Transportation for Emergency Response. It is designed specifically for physical therapists who provide athletic venue coverage and respond to acute injuries. The class includes assessment, management and prevention of cardio-respiratory emergencies, musculoskeletal injuries, medical emergencies such as shock or diabetic reactions and environmental injuries. EIM's ERC fulfills the physical therapist eligibility requirements for Sports Physical Therapy Residency Programs and application submission for the ABPTS- SCS exam.

Weekend Intensive will be help in Chicago, IL at the Hilton Garden Inn- Oak Brook on March 26-28, 2010. Pre-Course work is designed to be completed in 4-6 weeks and will be available on February 15, 2010.

EIM's ERC is composed predominantly of online learning. A variety of teaching strategies suitable to distance learning will be used, including guided discussions, medical literature review and self and peer-oriented performance analysis. Students will also meet for a 3 day weekend intensive to incorporate hands-on techniques.

At the end of the ERC you will be able to:

  • Use knowledge in the foundational and clinical sciences associated with response to injury/disease in order to enhance outcomes for patients with acute athletic injuries.
  • Participate in peer-assessment activities.
  • Participate in the design and implementation of decision-making guidelines.
  • Demonstrate clinical decision making skills, including clinical reasoning, clinical judgment and reflective practice.
  • Participate in scholarly activities to understand or contribute to the body of physical therapy knowledge.
  • Examine patients/clients by obtaining a primary assessment, secondary assessment and physical examination to guide clinical decision making regarding the packaging, re-evaluation and return to play of the acutely injured athlete.
  • Synthesize and analyze data from primary assessment, secondary assessment and physical examination to make clinical judgments regarding patient/client management.
  • Be a productive member of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team and the sports medicine team in the assessment and management of athletic injury.
  • Incorporate evidence/consensus-based practice in the management of patients/clients with acute athletic injury.
  • Course will provide 32 contact hours.
